- :>No, amigas are really expensive considering all the corner cutting done with
- :>the hardware. :) And low price points doesn't necessarily mean in
- :>comparison with PCs.
-
- :Again, when you buy in lots of hundreds instead of lots of thousands ...
- :cheap has very different meanings.
-
- The whole point is that whatever trouble AT had to go through to get the
- parts and get the Amigas made is of no consequence whatsoever to the end
- user. Nobody who's just entering the computer market and is looking for
- the "best" value for his money is going to buy an Amiga 1200 for $700 not
- including monitor just because he feels sorry for the fact that AT wasn't
- able to buy in better quantities. It just doesn't matter. What matters is
- how the Amiga, at whatever price it's at, stacks up to the competition in
- terms of software, speed, graphics/sound muscle, etc.
-
- Like it or not, *we're* not going to be the saviors of AT. They've got to
- convince the world the Amiga is a better system, or make a system where the
- Amiga is more powerful (in no uncertain terms) than the competition to
- attract people that aren't just current or former Amiga owners.
-
- :>What about the a500 and the a1200? These are the numbers machines, the
- :>ones that sell in the thousands rather than the hundreds. The amiga is not
- :>about the high end and the few that own them.
-
- :The A500 using 1.3 is ONE of the things that is hurting us now, along with bad
- :C= management,
-
- Whining about C='s mismanagement won't do anyone any good - although nobody
- denies that it had a quite negative effect on the state of the Amiga. As
- for the A500, when you sell a machine that isn't easily and relatively
- cheaply upgradable, people aren't going to upgrade. (Upgrading the OS on
- the 1.3 A500 involved opening the case, possibly soldering a jumper, etc.
- It wasn't easy for the casual user. Adding a hard drive got to be
- rather pricey.)
-
- The A1200 has almost the same problems, except that at least a hard drive
- (albeit an expensive one) can be fit in the case with less trouble and the
- trapdoor slot is *much* better than the 500's.
-
- too much PD/Shareware that is too good and should be wrapped,
- :boxed and sold commercially.
-
- Where are the commercial-grade PD/Shareware word processors and
- spreadsheets? :)
-
- : Until Amiga users decide they will 'upgrade'
- :both their OS and their systems just like the clone users do,
-
- The clone users got easier upgrades, so they upgrade more often. If I want
- to install Windows 95 on a 486, I install it from some disks. I don't have
- to open the case, remove chips, and solder jumpers from pin 1 to pin 31. :)
-
- : we will NEVER
- :be in the same markets as the clone users. And until so much great
- :PD/Shareware progs are boxed and sold commercially ONLY, we will never be
- :able to walk into our local computer stores and buy off the shelf.
-
- What's the driving force for this to happen?
-
- :>The a4000 is 'cheap', just not in price. :)
-
- :Cheap to you is nice to others I guess? :)
-
- Nice to some toaster users who require it. Not nice to most others due to
- some rather poor design by Commodore.
-
- :This 'rebel' does have a cause! My cause is to help support Amiga
- :Technologies so that when it's time for us and them to bite the bullet and
- :move on to better systems, faster OS's, more commercial software ... it
- :will be there for us with the same 'look and feel' that we have today!
-
- You mean when we all buy workstations? :)
